Work Continues Near Rockland Abutment Overnight Lane Closures on Northbound Thruway (I-87/I-287)

May 10, 2018

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to continue installing steel girders for the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge over River Road at the Rockland landing. The materials connect the eastbound span to the new on-land abutment.

The work is scheduled to occur during weekdays, concluding on Friday, May 18. During this period, motorists should expect traffic to be reduced to a single lane on River Road controlled by flag persons between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., motorists can expect periodic, 20-minute traffic stops, as steel girders are lifted into position over the roadway.

TZC is then scheduled to proceed with the installation of road deck panels in the area on weekdays from May 31 to June 5. The work requires daily periodic 5-minute traffic stops in the area between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with flag persons on site to facilitate the lane closings and maintain traffic safety.

Roadway Improvements
Following the installation of precast concrete slabs near the bridge’s Westchester landing, TZC is scheduled to proceed with grouting work in the area. The work creates a new base roadway for the twin-span crossing’s connection to the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) and requires overnight lane closures on the northbound Thruway.

At least one lane will remain open at all times. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

Additional work includes:

  • Excavation, backfilling and drainage work at Rockland abutment
  • Fence installation
  • Internal tower work
  • Removal of temporary access platforms
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Dismantling of the old bridge’s icebreakers, deck panels, piers and circular caissons

Boater Safety
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
