Westchester Landing Work Continues Operation Requires Overnight Lane Closures in Tarrytown

April 6, 2018

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) continues to prepare roadway sections of the northbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) for removal near the bridge’s Westchester landing. This will allow TZC to install new precast concrete slabs next week. The work will create a new base roadway for the twin-span crossing’s connection to the Thruway when the second span opens later this year.

The overnight work will require multiple lane closures on the northbound Thruway near the bridge’s Westchester landing. At least one lane will remain open at all times. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

TZC is also scheduled to pour concrete for the eastbound span’s Westchester landing early next week, weather permitting. The work will not require the closure of any Thruway traffic lanes.

Noise Panel Installation
TZC is scheduled to finalize a concrete noise barrier and associated fencing along the Thruway in South Nyack next week. The work will require temporary single lane closures on South Broadway beginning Monday between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. TZC will provide flagging support to provide access. School busses and emergency vehicles will be given priority throughout the temporary closure period.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
TZC is planning to pour concrete for the new State Police facility in Tarrytown in the coming days, weather permitting. TZC will also install exterior wall panels and glass windows at the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown. Demolition of the old bridge’s maintenance garage is also scheduled to continue.

Additional work includes:

  • Girder assembly installation
  • Deck panel installation
  • Fence installation on eastbound span
  • Internal tower work
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Dismantling of the old bridge’s foundations, piers and circular caissons

Boater Safety
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
