Westbound Span Traffic Shift Preparation Continues Structural Steel Installation On Eastbound Span Progresses

August 4, 2017

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) continues to prepare the westbound span of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, which will begin operations to shift four westbound traffic lanes during the overnight of Aug. 25. This includes wearing surface preparations and paving, which has progressed from the Rockland approach to the main span. Work will continue across the Westchester approach in the coming weeks.

Structural Steel Installation
TZC continues to install structural steel sections and stay cables on the eastbound main span, with connections to the Westchester and Rockland approaches completed this week. To date, 76 of the eastbound span’s 96 stay cables have been installed.

Electronic Testing
TZC will test the westbound bridge’s electronic systems in the coming weeks. Backup generator testing will take place near the Westchester landing between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, and Tuesday, Aug. 8, with sound barriers in place.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
Steel erection continues at the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance facility in Tarrytown this week. Crews will also continue with footing and retaining wall construction for the new State Police facility, also in Tarrytown.

Additional work includes:

  • Fence installation
  • Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
  • Survey inspections on the existing bridge
  • Pier substructure work
  • Expansion joint operations
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Electrical equipment installation

Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction through the end of this year. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.

More boater safety information, including the U.S. Coast Guard Notice to Mariners, a construction site map and GPS-tracked construction vessel locations, can be found at NewNYBridge.com/Boater.
