“Up, Up and Away!” Super Crane Removes TZB Above Metro-North Train Tracks
In an overnight operation conducted last weekend, an entire steel section of the Tappan Zee Bridge located above the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line was raised and removed last weekend by the project’s powerhouse crane, I Lift NY.

The removal was accomplished with careful planning and close coordination with Metro-North. Overnight train service was adjusted to accommodate the operation.

To disconnect the steel assembly, measuring 235-feet in length and weighing more than 1,300 tons, Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) first removed the concrete roadway panels on its surface. Workers then cut the segment, separating it from the old bridge’s concrete piers and other steel sections.

By sunrise, I Lift NY had successfully placed the section on a floating barge, where it was prepared for transport and recycling offsite.

I Lift NY is scheduled to remove 18 similar sections throughout the dismantling effort.

The dismantling of the old bridge will allow the project team to connect the second span of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge to land at both shores next year.
