Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) is scheduled to realign the southbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) traffic lanes near the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge next week. The realigned traffic lanes will allow TZC to continue roadway improvements in the area. The traffic shift operation will require multiple overnight lane and ramp closures.
At least one lane will remain open in both directions except during the early morning hours of Monday, July 15, near Thruway exit 10 (Nyack – South Nyack – US Route 9W) and Tuesday, July 16, near Thruway exit 9 (Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow – US Route 9) when State Police will temporarily hold southbound traffic for approximately 15 minutes. The traffic stops will allow workers to shift barriers and equipment.
Work during the overnight of Monday, July 15, will require a temporary closure of the Thruway exit 10 southbound on-ramp. Southbound drivers will be detoured to the exit 11 (Nyack – South Nyack – US Route 9W) on-ramp, shown below.
Work during the overnight of Tuesday, July 16, will require temporary closures of the Thruway exit 9 southbound off-ramp. Southbound drivers will be detoured to the exit 8A (Elmsford – NY Route 119 – Saw Mill River Parkway North) off-ramp, shown below.
Continuing roadway and overhead gantry improvements will require overnight lane closures on the southbound Thruway tonight. Specific lane and ramp closure times are listed in the chart below.

River Road Work
TZC is scheduled to conduct painting operations on the Thruway overpass at River Road in Grand View next week. Work will take place within an overhead containment system, designed to mitigate the impact on the travelling public and nearby residents. The work will not require lane closures and noise-abating curtains will be installed around the operation’s machinery.
The operations are scheduled to occur during daytime hours, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. The work is anticipated to be completed in approximately four weeks.
Bicycle/Pedestrian Path
Construction of the shared bicycle and pedestrian path continues.
On the bridge, TZC will continue to work on the northern side of the westbound span for the path’s overlooks and tension mesh.
At the Westchester Landing, construction continues at the terminus site walls, storage building and visitor pavilion. Operations include pouring concrete and the placement of concrete masonry units, rebar and granite walls.
At the Rockland Landing, prep work to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and South Franklin Street is underway and is scheduled to continue in the area for several weeks.
Additional work includes:
- Fencing, grading and paving near bridge landings
- Area preparation at the New York State Thruway Maintenance and New York State Police facilities
- Dismantling of the old bridge’s foundations and west anchor span, weather permitting
Boater Safety
Partial closures of the main navigation channel may be necessary, as TZC continues to dismantle the Tappan Zee Bridge’s foundations and west anchor span.
All vessels should avoid the perimeter of all buoys and stay within the navigation channel as demolition operations continue this coming week.
Cranes, barges and other equipment may occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.
Times and dates of the potential, partial closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.
Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
