The new bridge moved another giant step forward this week as Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) installed the fourth and final concrete crossbeam on the main span. In addition to supporting the future road deck, the massive precast beams will reinforce the outward-angled towers as they grow to their ultimate 419-foot height.
The four-hour operation was carried out with meticulous precision by TZC’s synchronized team of crane operators, ironworkers, engineers, electricians, mechanics and survey crews, as well as the I Lift NY super crane, the only crane on the project capable of raising the 750-ton crossbeam.
During the coming weeks, TZC will finalize the connections to the towers by tying steel reinforcements, installing temporary formwork and pouring concrete. After the concrete cures, TZC will remove the formwork, revealing the completed connections.
