Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to begin preparation work next week to remove roadway sections of the northbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) near the bridge’s Westchester landing. This will allow TZC to install new precast concrete slabs in the coming weeks. The work will create a new base roadway for the twin-span crossing’s connection to the Thruway when the second span opens later this year.
The overnight work will require multiple lane closures on the northbound Thruway near the bridge’s Westchester landing. At least one lane will remain open at all times. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

Noise Panel Installation
TZC is scheduled to finalize a concrete noise barrier and associated fencing along the Thruway in South Nyack in the coming weeks. TZC is treating the barriers with sound-absorbing material to further reduce traffic noise in the nearby community.
Beginning Thursday, April 5, TZC is scheduled to install fencing atop the noise barrier wall near South Broadway. The work will require temporary single lane closures on South Broadway on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. TZC will provide flagging support to provide access. School busses and emergency vehicles will be given priority throughout the temporary closure period.
Girder Assembly Installation
TZC is scheduled to continue installing steel girder assemblies for the eastbound span in the coming weeks. The project’s largest crane, dubbed I Lift NY, will raise and place the assemblies.
Deck Panel Installation
TZC is scheduled to continue installing the eastbound span’s deck panels. More than 3,000 steel-reinforced precast concrete deck panels are being used to create the span’s base driving surface.
Westchester Landing Work
TZC is expected to pour concrete for the eastbound span’s Westchester landing on Tuesday, April 3, weather permitting. The work will not require the closure of any Thruway traffic lanes.
Maintenance and State Police Facilities
TZC is planning to pour concrete for the new State Police facility in Tarrytown in the coming days, weather permitting. TZC will also continue installation of exterior wall panels at the facility and the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown. Demolition of the old bridge’s maintenance garage is also scheduled to continue.
Additional work includes:
- Stripping formwork at the Rockland abutment
- Fence installation on eastbound span
- Internal tower work
- Electrical equipment installation and testing
- Dismantling of the old bridge’s foundations, piers and circular caissons
Boater Safety
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.
Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.
Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
