Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) will bring the eastbound span to life this summer by fully powering the structure’s lighting systems, utilizing highlight-efficient LED technology.

The bridge’s light-emitting diodes (LEDs), created by Philips Lighting, are designed with 100,000-hour lifespans, more than triple the lifespan of conventional lamps, and consume an estimated 75 percent less energy when compared to traditional lighting technology. The LEDs do not contain mercury, a typical component in fluorescent lamps, making them recyclable and less impactful on the environment.

The roadway lighting fixtures include removable LED boards, allowing maintenance teams to quickly and easily replace the illuminations. The aesthetic lighting fixtures also utilize LED fixtures to help accentuate the structures architectural features, specifically the main span towers, stay cables and concrete piers.

TZC will soon conduct tests of the roadway and aesthetic lights on the eastbound span to confirm the aiming angle for each fixture follows the plan set forth by lighting designers. The project’s Visual Quality Panel, made up of local community members and design professionals, helped develop the lighting plan.
