Steel Girder Installation This Weekend Overnight Work to Occur above Metro-North’s Hudson Line in Tarrytown

March 9, 2018

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to install steel girder assemblies for the eastbound span of the new bridge above the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line in Tarrytown this weekend, weather permitting. The assemblies will connect the Westchester abutment to the eastbound span’s offshore piers.

The project’s largest crane, dubbed I Lift NY, will be used to raise and place the assemblies. The operation will take place during the early morning hours of Saturday, March 10, and Sunday, March 11.

To accommodate the operation, northbound train service will not operate on the Hudson Line between Yonkers and Tarrytown stations from approximately 1 a.m. until 5 a.m. on Sunday, March 11.  Metro-North customers should expect an additional 25 minutes in travel time during the busing operation.

Southbound train service will not be affected by the overnight operation.

Metro-North recommends that customers plan their travel accordingly by either traveling earlier in the evening or later in the morning when substitute busing is not in effect.

TZC is scheduled to temporarily close the southbound lane on River Road in South Nyack/Grand View to facilitate a concrete pour for the eastbound span’s Rockland abutment on Monday, March 12, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., weather permitting. TZC will provide flagging support to provide access in both directions. School busses will be given priority throughout the closure period.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
TZC is preparing to pour concrete for the new State Police facility in Tarrytown early next week. TZC will also continue installation of exterior wall panels at the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown.

Additional work includes:

  • Girder installation near Rockland shoreline
  • Deck work on eastbound span
  • Internal tower work
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing

Boater Safety
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
