Roadway Preparation On Eastbound Span Continues Concrete Pours Scheduled for Westchester Landing

August 10, 2018

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to continue with waterproofing and overnight deck paving activities on the eastbound span. Construction vehicles will access the eastbound span from the southbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) in Rockland County.

Gantry Assembly
TZC is scheduled to begin assembly of a highway sign structure near the Rockland landing next week. Signage on the new bridge’s gantries will inform motorists of accidents and direct them away from closed lanes, reducing the potential for other incidents.

Concrete Pours at Westchester Landing
To complete the eastbound span’s mainline, TZC is scheduled to pour concrete at the Westchester landing next week, weather permitting. Concrete trucks will access the area from the New York State Thruway.

Shared Use Path—Rockland Landing
The Thruway Authority will implement traffic control measures in South Nyack in advance of construction for the project’s shared use path. Crews are scheduled to install temporary traffic signals on the South Broadway bridge, which will be reduced to one travel lane so workers can safely construct an underpass for the path.

Roadway and Aesthetic Lighting
TZC continues to install roadway lighting fixtures on the eastbound span. Periodic testing of the aesthetic lighting and roadway lighting will continue to occur in the coming weeks.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
TZC is scheduled to continue operations on the new State Police facility in Tarrytown, including the installation of metal wall panels, insulation and plumbing. TZC will also continue internal work on the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown, which includes installing utility lines, dry wall and wiring.

Additional work includes:

  • Barrier and subbase placement near the Westchester landing
  • Barrier, drainage and conduit placement near the Rockland landing
  • Expansion joint installation
  • Noise barrier and fence installation
  • Removing temporary access structures
  • Internal tower work
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Dismantling of the old bridge’s pile caps, piles and suspended span

Boater Safety
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
