Rising Roadway Work Begins on Main Span Steel

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) has begun building the roadway for the new bridge’s main span.

In June, TZC installed four large pre-assembled sections of steel, weighing nearly 340,000 pounds each, atop the main span crossbeams. These steel segments will allow the team to build out from the towers one section at a time, attaching stay cables to the structure along the way. Precast concrete deck panels will be placed in the erected steel sections to provide a base driving surface.

The roadway work follows the recent completion of the main span towers’ concrete crossbeams, which support the angled structures. The crossbeams began as precast segments that were prepared off-site and barged directly to the main span for installation. Crews placed these massive sections, which weigh up to 750 tons, atop temporary support structures before making the final connections with steel reinforcements and concrete.

The first stay cables will be installed this summer.
