Paving Operations Scheduled Next Week Overnight Lane And Ramp Closures On Southbound Thruway (I-87/I-287)

May 10, 2019

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to continue roadway improvements near the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Paving of the southbound exit 9 (Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow – US Route 9) off- ramp requires multiple overnight lane closures on the southbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287).

Drivers will be detoured approximately one mile west to exit 8A (Elmsford – NY Route 119 – Saw Mill River Parkway North) to access the northbound Thruway and the northbound exit 9 off-ramp (see map below).

At least one lane will remain open at all times. Specific lane and ramp closure times are listed in the chart below.

Bicycle/Pedestrian Path
Construction of the shared bicycle and pedestrian path continues.

On the bridge, TZC will continue to install glass panels on the northern side of the westbound span for the path’s overlooks and work on the path’s barrier.

At the Westchester Landing, construction continues at the terminus site walls, storage building, visitor pavilion and canopy area. Operations include excavation, and the placement of sub-base, rebar, drainage and vapor barrier.

Additional work includes:

  • Landscaping, excavation, pouring concrete, placing asphalt, and tension mesh near bridge landings
  • Internal work and fence installation at the New York State Thruway Maintenance and New York State Police facilities
  • Dismantling of the old bridge’s foundations, weather permitting

Boater Safety
Periodic partial closures of the main navigation channel may be necessary, as TZC continues to dismantle the Tappan Zee Bridge’s west anchor span and salvage the collapsed east anchor span. Cranes, barges and other equipment may occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the potential, partial closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.

More boater safety information, including the U.S. Coast Guard Notice to Mariners, a construction site map and GPS-tracked construction vessel locations, can be found at NewNYBridge.com/Boater.
