Opening the Eastbound Span What You Need to Know About Friday Night’s Traffic Shift

The eastbound span is prepared for traffic.

When is the eastbound span of the bridge opening?
Operations to shift Westchester-bound traffic on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge to the crossing’s new eastbound span will begin on Friday night, Sept. 7, weather permitting. Motorists traveling on the southbound/eastbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) should plan for multiple lane closures and brief traffic stoppages so workers can reconfigure the landings and stripe the lanes at both ends of the new 3.1-mile span during the overnight operation. There will be no lane closures in the Rockland-bound direction. Motorists are encouraged to sign up for TRANSAlert emails at http://wwwapps.thruway.ny.gov/tas/ to receive real-time updates on traffic conditions and should download the free NYS Thruway Authority mobile app for additional Thruway-specific information.

How many lanes will be available on the twin-span bridge?
The twin-span bridge will carry a total of eight general traffic lanes. Westchester-bound motorists will have access to four general traffic lanes and emergency shoulders. A dedicated bus lane will open next month for Westchester-bound traffic. Until the bus lane striping is installed and the lane opened to bus traffic, the extra wide right shoulder will be used for emergency stopping only. Motorists are not permitted to use the extra wide shoulder as a driving lane. Rockland-bound motorists will continue to use the current four lanes on the westbound span. In the coming weeks, the four lanes of westbound traffic will be shifted to the opposite side of the span (where eastbound traffic used to be) to allow for on-bridge construction of the bicycle/pedestrian path and its six overlooks.

What other work is taking place?
The project team is continuing to work on the bicycle/pedestrian path and its landing points in Rockland and Westchester counties as well as finishing construction of the new Thruway Authority maintenance and State Police facilities in Tarrytown, along with the on-going dismantling of the Tappan Zee Bridge.
