The New NY Bridge Visual Quality Panel (VQP) today announced that it has developed options for the design of the towers along the main span of the bridge and is actively seeking the public’s opinion before a final determination is made.
“From the beginning, a primary goal of this project has been to provide the Hudson Valley with an aesthetically pleasing bridge they can be proud of,” said VQP Chair Brian Conybeare, who is also Governor Cuomo’s special advisor for the New NY Bridge. “It’s our job to work with the public to ensure we meet this goal. Needless to say, we are looking forward to hearing residents’ thoughts on these two great designs.”
The two designs being considered focus on the tops of the main span towers.
Option A is the original design provided for in the Tappan Zee Constructor’s proposal—flat, rectangular, squared-off towers that rise 409’ above the water. It does not require any changes to the structure, construction calendar or cost.
Option B has chamfered or angled towers that rise 419’ above the water and provide a more slender appearance. This option — which is being recommended by the VQP — does not require any changes to the structure or construction schedule, but could increase the price slightly.
The VQP is looking for as much public input as possible and is encouraging residents to visit our website www.NewNYBridge.com, see the designs, and voice their opinions. The public comment period will remain open through Tuesday March 19th. All comments will then be shared with the VQP which will make a recommendation to the Thruway Authority.
The VQP was established in February 2013 to provide aesthetic guidance and support to the Tappan Zee Constructors, while ensuring that the public’s concerns about aesthetics are considered in the ongoing development of the design. The panel consists of one chair appointed by the Thruway Authority, a visual quality manager from the design-build team and from the Authority, and 13 public representatives.
