Dozens of art works interpreting the Tappan Zee Bridge and marking the construction of the New NY Bridge will be on display this fall at the new bridge project Community Outreach Centers in Rockland and Westchester. The art was created for the New York State Thruway Authority’s 2014 Bridge Art Show, a juried exhibition that invited local painters, sculptors and photographers to showcase their interpretations of the new bridge design or the existing Tappan Zee Bridge.
Opening receptions for the show will be held on Friday, September 5th in Nyack and Friday, September 12th in Tarrytown. The 85 works will remain on display until November 1st.
The New NY Bridge project’s Visual Quality Panel – which includes Hudson Valley residents involved in the arts, architecture, planning and historic preservation – will select a best of show and two runners up in each location.
“There is an art to designing a beautiful bridge and an art to capturing it on canvas, in a photo or other media. The new and old bridges cross an expanse of the Hudson River that is particularly beautiful. I look forward to seeing the variety of imaginative artworks created by our talented Hudson Valley artists,” said Julie Ramos, Executive Director for Rockland Center for the Arts, one of the organizations that collaborated on the art show.
Just as the Tappan Zee and the New NY Bridge connect Rockland and Westchester, the 2014 Bridge Art Show is meant to foster connections between communities on either side of the river and throughout the Hudson Valley. So, Westchester submissions will be on display in Rockland and Rockland submissions will be featured in Westchester. Residents and local art lovers are encouraged to visit both locations.
“We are delighted that the New NY Bridge team developed this exhibition, which gives the public the opportunity to see the bridge through the eyes of creative artists. The Tappan Zee is the gateway to the Hudson Valley region, which is home to thousands of artists, and their numbers are growing rapidly. The exhibition builds greater public awareness of the vibrant creative life of communities north of New York City,” said Janet Langsam, Chief Executive Officer of ArtsWestchester.
