Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is preparing to install steel girders and concrete deck panels for the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge over River Road at the Rockland landing. The materials will connect the eastbound span to the new on-land abutment.
The work is scheduled to occur weekdays from Monday, May 7, to Friday, May 18. During this period, motorists should expect traffic to be reduced to a single lane controlled by flag persons between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., motorists can expect periodic, 20-minute traffic stops, as steel girders are lifted into position over the roadway.
The installation of road deck panels, scheduled to occur weekdays from May 31 to June 5, will also require daily periodic 5-minute traffic stops in the area between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Flag persons will be on site to facilitate the lane closings and maintain traffic safety.
Roadway Improvements
TZC is scheduled to continue installing new precast concrete slabs near the bridge’s Westchester landing. The work will create a new base roadway for the twin-span crossing’s connection to the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) and require overnight lane closures on the northbound Thruway.
Work will also necessitate closing the northbound Thruway exit 9 (Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow – US Route 9) on-ramp from Route 119 during the overnight of Wednesday, May 9. Drivers will be detoured approximately one mile east on Route 119 to access the northbound Thruway (see map below). The exit 9 off-ramp will remain accessible from the northbound Thruway.
At least one lane will remain open at all times. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
TZC is planning to pour concrete for the new State Police facility in Tarrytown in the coming days, weather permitting. TZC will also continue to install exterior wall panels and glass windows at the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown.
Additional work includes:
- Abutment backfilling near Rockland landing
- Fence installation
- Internal tower work
- Electrical equipment installation and testing
- Dismantling of the old bridge’s foundations, piers and circular caissons
Boater Safety
The Hudson River’s main navigation channel is scheduled to be temporarily closed for up to 48 hours for work activities, starting 3 p.m., Monday. The time and date of the closure is subject to change and will be announced on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge) and on Marine Radio Channel 22A.
Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closure and the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel, as cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time.
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
