Girder Installation Continues At Rockland Approach Rockland Landing Prepared for Second Span Connection

January 12, 2018

Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) will continue steel girder installation at the second span’s Rockland approach next week, weather permitting. TZC will utilize mobile cranes to raise and place the girders.

Rockland Abutment Work
TZC is scheduled to temporarily close the southbound lane on River Road in South Nyack/Grand View to facilitate a concrete pour for the second span’s Rockland abutment on Friday, Jan. 19, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., weather permitting. TZC will provide flagging support to provide access in both directions. School busses will be given priority throughout the closure period.

Pier Removal
TZC is scheduled to remove the old bridge’s pier columns near the Westchester shoreline next week. The operation will utilize mobile cranes to place the material on barges.

Striping Operations
TZC is preparing to re-stripe the westbound lanes near the new bridge next week, weather permitting. The operation is tentatively scheduled for the overnight of Friday, Jan. 19, requiring the closure of up to three westbound lanes on the new bridge.

Additional work includes:

  • Pier substructure work
  • Concrete pours at former site of main span tower cranes
  • Internal tower work
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Foundation work near Westchester landing
  • Construction of Thruway maintenance and State Police facilities in Tarrytown

Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction and extensive demolition activities. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
