Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to continue dismantling operations of the old bridge with the assistance of the project’s largest crane, dubbed I Lift NY. The machine will be used to remove pier caps next week, west of the Hudson River main navigation channel.
Overhead Gantry Installation
TZC is installing overhead gantries, or sign structures, on the eastbound span. Signage on the eight gantries will inform motorists of accidents and direct them away from closed lanes, reducing the potential for other incidents.
Eastbound Span Roadway Work
TZC is scheduled to continue work on the eastbound span roadway by performing closure pours at the Westchester approach. The work follows the installation of the project’s final precast concrete deck panels.
Concrete Pours at Rockland Landing
To complete the eastbound span’s mainline, TZC is scheduled to pour concrete at the Rockland landing next week, weather permitting. Concrete trucks are anticipated to access the area from the New York State Thruway from a nearby maintenance ramp.
Maintenance and State Police Facilities
TZC is scheduled to continue operations on the new State Police facility in Tarrytown, including wall framing, metal wall panel installation and pouring concrete. TZC will also continue internal work on the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown, which includes installing utility lines, windows and dry wall.
Additional work includes:
- Backfilling and formwork placement near the Westchester landing
- Barrier placement near the Rockland landing
- Expansion joint installation
- Fence and barrier installation on the eastbound span
- Removing temporary access structures
- Internal tower work
- Electrical equipment installation and testing
- Dismantling of the old bridge’s icebreakers, deck panels, piers and circular caissons
Boater Safety
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.
Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.
Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
