Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to continue concrete pier construction for the new bridge’s second span near the Westchester shoreline following the removal of the old bridge’s roadway in the area. Work includes pouring concrete, placing precast pier caps and installing bearings atop the caps.
The project’s 900-ton pier caps were prefabricated by Coastal Precast Systems in Chesapeake, Va. and barged directly to the project site for installation. The prefabrication process allows TZC to install large sections of the new bridge faster and with greater ease.
Rockland Abutment Work
TZC is scheduled to temporarily close one southbound lane on River Road in South Nyack/Grand View to facilitate the concrete pour of the second span’s Rockland abutment on Tuesday, Dec. 19, between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. TZC will provide flagging support to provide access in both directions. School busses will be given priority throughout the closure period.
Steel Girder Installation
TZC is scheduled to continue girder installation on the second span next week. TZC will utilize mobile cranes to raise and place the girder assemblies at the Rockland and Westchester approaches.
Temporary Barrier and Drainage Work
TZC is scheduled to work on the temporary barrier separating northbound/westbound and southbound/eastbound traffic on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge during the early morning hours of Friday, Dec. 15, requiring multiple lane closures listed in the chart below.
TZC is also scheduled to perform drainage work near the new bridge, requiring overnight lane closures on the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) northbound/westbound lanes on the night of Monday, Dec. 18, and southbound/eastbound lanes on the night of Tuesday, Dec. 19. Lane closure times and locations are listed in the chart below.

- Dismantling of the old bridge’s roadway
- Tower crane removal
- Internal tower work
- Electrical equipment installation and testing
- Landscaping near bridge landings
- Excavation, drainage work and concrete paving in Westchester County
- Construction of Thruway maintenance and State Police facilities in Tarrytown
Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction and extensive demolition activities. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.
