Brief Traffic Stop Planned For Early Thursday Morning Work Continues in Westchester and Rockland Counties

July 26, 2017

The removal of a mobile crane near the Westchester County landing will require a single traffic stop of the New York State Thruway’s (I-87/I-287) four southbound/eastbound lanes during at approximately 4 a.m. on Thursday, July 27. Conducted by New York State Police, the traffic stop is expected to last up to 15 minutes.

Structural Steel Installation
Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) continues to install structural steel sections and stay cables on the eastbound main span, with connections to the Westchester approach occurring this week. Connections to the eastbound Rockland approach are scheduled to occur in the coming weeks.

Landings Preparation
Overnight paving work near the Rockland landing is scheduled during the overnights of Tuesday, Aug. 2, and Wednesday, Aug. 3. The operation will not affect Thruway traffic lanes.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
Steel erection continues at the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance facility in Tarrytown this week. Crews will also continue with footing and retaining wall construction for the new State Police facility, also in Tarrytown. To form part of the retaining wall, TZC has begun installing steel sheets with a vibratory hammer.

Additional work includes:

  • Fence installation
  • Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
  • Survey inspections on the existing bridge
  • Pier substructure work
  • Expansion joint operations
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Wearing surface preparations/paving
  • Electrical equipment installation

Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction through the end of this year. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.

More boater safety information, including the U.S. Coast Guard Notice to Mariners, a construction site map and GPS-tracked construction vessel locations, can be found at NewNYBridge.com/Boater.
