Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) is scheduled to realign the northbound New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) traffic lanes near the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge next week. The realigned traffic lanes will allow TZC to continue roadway improvements in the area. The traffic shift operation will require multiple overnight lane and ramp closures.
At least one lane will remain open in both directions except during the overnights of Monday, June 24, and Tuesday, June 25, when State Police will temporarily hold northbound traffic near exit 9 (Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow – US Route 9) in Tarrytown for approximately 15 minutes. The traffic stops will allow workers to shift barriers and equipment.
Work during the overnights of Monday, June 24, and Wednesday, June 26, will require temporary closures of the Thruway exit 9 northbound on-ramp. Northbound drivers will be detoured to the exit 8 on-ramp, shown below.
Work during the overnight of Tuesday, June 25, will require a temporary closure of the Thruway exit 10 (Nyack – South Nyack – US Route 9W) northbound off-ramp. Northbound drivers will be detoured to the exit 11 off-ramp, shown below.
Continuing roadway and overhead gantry improvements will require daytime single-lane closures this week. Specific lane and ramp closure times are listed in the chart below.

River Road Work
TZC is scheduled to conduct milling and overlay operations on River Road in South Nyack near the bridge underpass next week, requiring single lane closures during the hours of operation – from approximately 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flag persons will be on site to facilitate the lane closings and maintain traffic safety. School buses and emergency vehicles will be given priority throughout the closure period. Cyclists and pedestrians should follow flagger’s instructions.
Bicycle/Pedestrian Path
Construction of the shared bicycle and pedestrian path continues.
On the bridge, TZC will continue to work on the northern side of the westbound span for the path’s overlooks, comfort barrier and tension mesh.
At the Westchester Landing, construction continues at the terminus site walls, storage building and visitor pavilion. Operations include excavation and the placement of concrete masonry units, decking, sub-base and granite walls.
At the Rockland Landing, installation of noise barrier panels will continue at Elizabeth Place Park along the southbound Thruway.
Additional work includes:
- Fencing and pouring concrete near bridge landings
- Fence installation and area preparation at the New York State Thruway Maintenance and New York State Police facilities
- Dismantling of the old bridge’s foundations and west anchor span, weather permitting
Boater Safety
Partial closures of the main navigation channel may be necessary, as TZC continues to dismantle the Tappan Zee Bridge’s foundations and west anchor span.
All vessels should avoid the perimeter of all buoys and stay within the navigation channel as demolition operations continue this coming week.
Cranes, barges and other equipment may occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.
Times and dates of the potential, partial closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.
Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
