The Rockland abutment is prepared for its upcoming connection to the eastbound span.

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is getting ready to place the remaining girders for the eastbound span.

Starting Monday, TZC will use land-based cranes to install nine steel girders above River Road and Piermont Avenue. The work is scheduled to occur weekdays from May 7 to May 18. During this period, motorists should expect traffic to be reduced to a single lane controlled by flag persons between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., motorists can expect periodic, 20-minute traffic stops, as steel girders are lifted into position over the roadway (illustrated below).

Unlike the structural steel recently installed by the I Lift NY super crane near the Westchester shoreline – which were grouped into massive assemblies measuring up to 410 feet long – the Rockland girders will be placed individually and bolted together once in place. The 135-foot-long girders will link the bridge’s piers in the Hudson River to the on-land Rockland abutment. This will allow TZC to complete the concrete roadway and connect the eastbound span to the New York State Thruway.

The installation of road deck panels, scheduled to occur weekdays from May 31 to June 5, will also require daily periodic 5-minute traffic stops in the area between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Flag persons will be on site to facilitate the lane closings and maintain traffic safety.

Following the work at the Rockland shore, TZC will install girders on the adjacent span.

When the operation is complete, TZC will have raised and placed more than 100,000 tons of American forged steel for the twin-span crossing. If laid end-to-end, the steel would stretch for more than 30 miles, greater than the distance between South Nyack and the Statue of Liberty.
