Deck Panel Work Continues Next Week Noise Panel Installation in South Nyack

March 16, 2018

Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) is scheduled to continue installing the eastbound span’s deck panels next week. More than 3,000 steel-reinforced precast concrete deck panels are being used to create the span’s base driving surface.

Once the panels are set atop the bridge’s steel superstructure, they are joined with galvanized steel, concrete and steel shear studs. Many of the panels are uniquely designed and fabricated to account for the curves and super-elevation of the new bridge’s alignment.

TZC will continue to create the final driving surface of the bridge by placing waterproofing and asphalt paving mix on the deck to ensure durability and provide a quiet, safe, and smooth ride for drivers.

Rockland Abutment Work
TZC is scheduled to pour concrete for the eastbound span’s Rockland abutment on Tuesday, March 20, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., weather permitting. TZC will provide flagging support on River Road in South Nyack/Grand View during the operation.

Noise Panel Installation
TZC is scheduled to finalize a concrete noise barrier and associated fencing along the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) in South Nyack in the coming weeks. TZC is treating the barriers with sound-absorbing material to further reduce traffic noise in the nearby community.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
TZC is pouring concrete for the new State Police facility in Tarrytown this afternoon, as well as next week. TZC will also continue installation of exterior wall panels at the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown. TZC is also demolishing the old bridge’s maintenance garage in the area.

Additional work includes:

  • Girder assembly installation
  • Excavating and installing conduits near Westchester landing
  • Fence installation on eastbound span
  • Internal tower work
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Dismantling of the old bridge’s foundations and piers

Boater Safety
Periodic closures of the main navigation channel are anticipated to occur during construction and demolition periods. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
