After successfully removing a large section of steel above the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line last weekend, Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) will continue dismantling operations above the Hudson River.
Work above the water includes cutting and dividing sections of steel and concrete into manageable sections. Floating cranes, including I Lift NY, raise the sections and place them on barges, to be transported offsite.
The progress near the Rockland and Westchester shorelines allows TZC to continue construction on the piers for the new bridge’s second span. TZC is installing rebar and pouring concrete to create the piers as dismantling efforts move further away from the shorelines.
Drainage Work
Drainage work will require overnight closures of New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) northbound/westbound traffic lanes from exit 9 (Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow – US Route 9) to exit 10 (Nyack – South Nyack – US Route 9W) on Monday, Nov. 20. Specific lane closure times are listed in the chart below.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
Steel erection for the new State Police Facility in Tarrytown is scheduled to continue this week. Work is also progressing on the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance facility in Tarrytown, with the installation of metal panels for the building’s exterior.
Additional work includes:
- Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
- Pier substructure work
- Expansion joint operations
- Internal tower work
- Maintenance dock construction
- Electrical equipment installation and testing
- Rescheduled utility work near the Westchester landing in Tarrytown
- Landscaping near bridge landings
Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction and extensive demolition activities. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.
