Super Crane To Continue Dismantling Tappan Zee Bridge This Week Friday Overnight Work to Take Place above Metro-North’s Hudson Line in Tarrytown

November 10, 2017

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) will continue dismantling operations above the Hudson River by removing large sections of concrete and steel with mobile cranes.

The project’s I Lift NY super crane is scheduled to remove the second section of steel, located above Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line, beginning late tonight, weather permitting.

To accommodate the operation, train service will not operate on the Hudson Line between Irvington and Tarrytown stations from approximately tonight at midnight until 7 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. During this time, buses will substitute for trains between Yonkers and Tarrytown stations. Metro-North customers should expect an additional 30 minutes in travel time, and plan their travel accordingly.

In the event of inclement weather, TZC will postpone the operation to the evening of Saturday, Nov. 11.

The super crane will remove large sections of steel, weighing up to 1,300 tons. I Lift NY removed the first section near the Westchester shoreline this past Tuesday and will be used to remove 18 similar sections. The operations will occur further away from the Westchester shoreline, and will not impact Metro-North service.

The dismantling effort is required to complete the second span of the new Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Demolition materials will be placed on barges and transported to ancillary facilities offsite.

Maintenance and State Police Facilities
Steel erection for the new State Police Facility in Tarrytown is scheduled to continue this week. Work also progresses on the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance facility in Tarrytown, with the installation of metal panels for the building’s exterior.

Additional work includes:

  • Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
  • Pier substructure work
  • Expansion joint operations
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Utility work near the Westchester landing in Tarrytown

Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction and extensive demolition activities. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
