Opening Night Watch the First Vehicles Cross the New Bridge

Watch as the new bridge opens to Rockland-bound motorists.

After nearly four years of construction, the first span of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is now carrying motorists across the Hudson.

The first car drove onto the new bridge at 1:36 a.m. Saturday, capping an eventful week on the project.

This new video captures all of the hard work and excitement that was part of the overnight traffic shift.

A temporary traffic pattern is now place. In phase one, there are four northbound/westbound lanes on the new bridge, with the old bridge supporting four southbound/eastbound lanes.

In the fall, all traffic will be shifted to the new bridge as part of phase two. This traffic pattern will remain in effect until the second span is complete in 2018. At that time, motorists will experience the full benefits of the twin-span crossing with its 12-foot wide driving lanes, the addition of safety shoulders and lanes for emergency vehicles.
