Work continues on the second cable-stayed span.
As preparations advance on the first span of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) continues construction of the second cable-stayed span.
TZC successfully installed more than one million pounds of structural steel last month, connecting the cable-stayed main span to the Rockland and Westchester approaches. Because of the limited space available between the new span and the old bridge, TZC elected to “stick build” smaller steel members on site into larger, interconnected segments.
This method differed from the modular construction utilized on the westbound span’s connections, which involved preparing larger steel assemblies on land and quickly installing them with the project’s super crane, I Lift NY. This method, while efficient, required a large amount of space to accomplish – a luxury that was unavailable on the eastbound connections.
The steel sections are now being connected to the 419-foot main span towers with stay cables. To date, 76 of the 96 stay cables have been installed on the eastbound span. TZC is also installing precast concrete deck panels on the steel sections to provide a base driving surface.
The final five girder sections will be installed on the eastbound main span in the coming weeks to complete the structure’s cable-stayed roadway.
