Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) continues to install structural steel sections and stay cables on the eastbound main span, with connections to the eastbound approaches beginning this week. TZC has installed more than 70 of the eastbound bridge’s 96 stay cables to date.
Overhead Gantry Installation
TZC installed the first of eight overhead gantries, or sign structures, on the eastbound bridge this week. These signs will inform motorists of accidents and direct them away from closed lanes, reducing the potential for other incidents.
Roadway and Aesthetic Lighting
TZC will conduct periodic testing of the lighting fixtures on the westbound span in the coming weeks, confirming the connectivity of each luminaire.
Landings Preparation
Overnight paving work near the Rockland landing is scheduled during the overnights of Tuesday, July 25, and Wednesday, July 26. The operation will not affect New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) traffic lanes.
Maintenance and State Police Facilities
Steel erection continues at the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance facility in Tarrytown this week. Crews will also continue with footing and retaining wall construction for the new State Police facility, also in Tarrytown. To form part of the retaining wall, TZC has begun installing steel sheets with a vibratory hammer.

- Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
- Survey inspections on the existing bridge
- Pier substructure work
- Expansion joint operations
- Internal tower work
- Maintenance dock construction
- Wearing surface preparations/paving
- Electrical equipment installation
Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction through the end of this year. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures.
