I Lift NY is prepared for the latest efforts on the eastbound bridge.
The I Lift NY super crane recently returned to the Rockland side of the Hudson River in advance of the New NY Bridge project’s next structural steel operation.
Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is using the crane’s powerful lifting capabilities to set four girder assemblies on the eastbound span near the Rockland landing, starting today.
The super crane has already successfully installed more than 120 girder assemblies on the eastbound and westbound spans. This latest effort will utilize both I Lift NY and additional floating barges to place the steel atop the bridge’s concrete piers.
TZC crews will use I Lift NY to raise each assembly from the northern side of the westbound span to a floating barge between the westbound and eastbound spans in order to safely place the material near the existing Tappan Zee Bridge. The barge will then assist with maneuvering each girder assembly over the eastbound bridge’s concrete piers and safely lowering it onto the pier’s pedestals.
The assemblies are large sections of structural steel, composed of individual girders measuring up to 120 feet long. The final pair of these large girders was recently created by High Steel Structures in Pennsylvania and shipped to the project’s Port of Coeymans facility in Albany County. TZC will use the port’s 16-acre staging area to arrange the girders into full assemblies measuring up to 410 feet long.
The assemblies are also installed with infrastructure to carry communications, electrical power, water and compressed air to support bridge operations. Once completed, the assemblies are barged directly to the project site on a 20-hour journey down the Hudson River.
After the steel is installed, TZC can begin placing precast concrete road deck panels on the assemblies to complete the roadway’s base surface.
