Topping Off the First Set of Towers Time-Lapse Video Captures Construction

Tappan Zee Constructors recently completed the first two 419-foot towers of the iconic main span.

Our new time-lapse video captures the evolution of the westbound (Rockland-bound) towers aided by the project’s blue self-climbing jump forms. As each segment was completed, the forms “jumped” to the next level via a jacking system, allowing the next segment to be built on top of the preceding one.

The new bridge will have a total of eight towers – four each on the eastbound and westbound spans. The first two westbound towers will soon be joined by an additional pair in the coming weeks.

Construction began on all eight concrete towers in the late summer of 2015 following the completion of the main span pile caps. Since then, the structures have risen above the existing Tappan Zee Bridge and revealed their angled profile. Their sleek, chamfered design was decided after the project’s Visual Quality Panel received input from hundreds of interested stakeholders.
