Building on the benefits of cashless tolling, the New NY Bridge project will improve eastbound traffic flow near the Tappan Zee Bridge’s Westchester landing even further this week. Beginning on May 21, commuters will no longer be required to slow down and maneuver through the former Tarrytown toll plaza as four newly unobstructed lanes will be opened to traffic.
The new configuration, dubbed Phase 2, will take effect during the overnight of Friday, May 20. The four right eastbound lanes will be unobstructed, allowing traffic to seamlessly shift from the bridge to the Thruway. TZC will then remove the remaining toll plaza structures and create landings for the new bridge.
The upcoming traffic shift is the result of nearly four weeks of demolition operations, which included the removal of concrete barriers and overhead toll plaza structures by Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC). The cleared lanes will allow traffic to seamlessly shift from the bridge, speeding commutes across the river.
After the transition, commuters taking the eastbound Thruway exit 9 (Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow – US Route 9) off-ramp are advised to stay in the right-hand lane, as there will be little time to merge from the left at highway speeds.
The new lane configuration will be in place throughout the spring, summer and most of the fall of 2016.
