The New NY Bridge outreach centers display a wealth of informative materials and hands-on experiences, including life-size cross sections of steel piles.

In addition to educational outreach programs that have reached thousands of students, ongoing public presentations and a comprehensive website, the New NY Bridge project maintains two community outreach centers near the project site. Located in downtown Tarrytown and Nyack, and open seven days a week, the centers provide a window into the largest bridge and highway project in the nation. To date, the centers have been visited by nearly 6,000 people, in addition to hosting scores of community meetings.

The outreach centers are staffed by outreach team members and interns and house informative materials that illuminate the ins-and-outs of the New NY Bridge project, including diagrams, visualizations and fact sheets. The latest displays detail the new bridge’s foundation, explaining everything from geotechnical investigations to steel reinforcement. Visitors can even have a hands-on experience with some of these materials, such as life-size cross sections of steel piles that are large enough for an adult to walk through.

The centers also display works of art created by local residents. The art was created for the New York State Thruway Authority’s 2014 Bridge Art Show, a juried exhibition that invited local painters, sculptors and photographers to showcase their interpretations of the new bridge design or the existing Tappan Zee Bridge.

Several models of the new bridge made up of K’NEX® and LEGO® pieces, created by students throughout the region, are also featured prominently. Most of these models were created in cooperation with our educational outreach effort, which uses the bridge project to encourage students to consider academic fields such as science, technology, engineering and math. The Rockland outreach center is also host to a fantastic scale model of the new bridge’s main span that was constructed using 3D printing technology.

Outreach center staffers are always ready to answer questions from the public and can refer any concerns and comments directly to the project team for follow up. Visitors can also stay up to date by signing up for informative weekly emails at the outreach centers or online through the project website NewNYBridge.com.

The outreach centers are located at:

The Rockland viewing platform, part of Nyack’s new fishing pier currently under construction at Memorial Park, will be available later this spring. The project’s day-by-day progress also can be tracked from the comfort of home, thanks to on-line construction cameras situated at various vantage points on and around the project site.
