Preconstruction Geotechnical Investigations for New NY Bridge to Begin Monday, March 25

March 22, 2013

Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC will begin conducting preconstruction geotechnical surveys on March 25 to determine soil conditions in and near the Hudson River.

Following up on the “Smart Early Work” that was undertaken in 2012 to obtain more detailed information regarding conditions in the river, Tappan Zee Constructors will be conducting additional engineering analyses of the river bottom. These tests will help designers determine the properly-sized piers and supporting foundations for the new bridge.

The testing operations will be conducted by small drilling rigs starting near the tower locations for the new bridge and working their way across the river. The river-based operations will run continually once the test-boring operation has begun from Monday through Friday and possibly Saturday, and are scheduled to take approximately eight weeks to complete.

Two drilling rigs will start work the week of March 25th, with additional units in the following weeks.  The expected noise levels from these boring machines are minimal.
