Tappan Zee Constructors placed the final 200-ton pier cap for the current phase of operations with the assistance of the I Lift NY super crane.

Years of hard work and careful planning on the New NY Bridge project are paying off as Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) recorded several construction milestones this week.

Using the I Lift NY super crane, TZC placed the final prefabricated pier cap for the northern span. The 200-ton concrete cap was built in Chesapeake, Virginia, and barged to the project site for installation. Four additional pier caps of this type have already been produced and will be installed in 2017 on the southern span, after the existing Tappan Zee Bridge is demolished.

Prefabrication also is being used to complete the new bridge’s road deck. Recently, TZC placed the 1,000th concrete deck panel atop previously-installed structural steel at the Rockland approach. Weighing as much as 74,000 pounds each, the panels were barged downriver from the Port of Coeymans near Albany.

Additionally, April witnessed the new crossing’s soon-to-be iconic 419-foot towers reach their halfway mark, which is higher than the existing Tappan Zee Bridge’s roadway.

Also this week, TZC moved the super crane closer to the Westchester shoreline. I Lift NY will be used to install hundreds of tons of structural steel as the Westchester approach steadily takes shape.
